A recent survey conducted by Harvard Business School found that an estimated 16% of US companies will continue to work remotely after the COVID-19 pandemic has ended. These businesses that will continue to work remotely will have likely already developed remote business communication tactics to keep teams and employees productive; however, they may not have adapted their crisis response plans to work in a remote setting. Tranell Morant, a business communications advisor, hopes to stress the importance of businesses making these changes as remote teams will face many unexpected challenges as remote work continues to progress. Today, Tranell Morant will discuss what communication tactics management can use during crises to keep remote teams productive. 

Communicate Empathy 

During times of crisis, it is essential that business leaders recognize the unique needs of all employees and communicate their resolution to aiding their team members through the crisis. While it is also important to communicate a crisis plan to employees, recognizing the emotional toll crises have on teams will help employees maintain a sense of teamwork and be a reminder to employees that their company leaders appreciate their efforts. Providing support through empathetic communication will help employees remain engaged and productive  

Provide Individual Employee Support

Supervisors possess the unique job of leading virtual teams by example and must recognize their power to set the work standard and impact their team’s morale. Those in management position during work crises should adopt the following practices to ensure team members remain productive and happy within their positions: 

Over-Communicate: While face-to-face interactions will be few and far between for remote teams, those in management positions must remember to set the standard of communication for their team. By using multiple forms of communication and checking in on staff regularly, management will demonstrate to the team that they should aim to over-communicate rather than under-communicate throughout the workday. 

Be Available: Employees will rarely have any difficulty coming to their supervisor with questions and concerns in an office setting. However, a zoom call or quick email is often a poor substitute for these in-person interactions for remote teams. For this reason, it is even more crucial that leadership work scheduled business hours and let team members know when they will be away from their computer and how to reach you. 

Be Transparent and Present with Staff

Adaptability, consistent communication, and support are all the signs of a successful virtual team. In times of crisis, supervisors must remind employees that all the standards of workplace policies and expectations will remain in place but that they can come to their team leader will any questions or concerns. This means providing individuals support to team members while also demonstrating transparent communication.
